Gather, Link, Recommend: A Framework for Earning Your Seat at the Table
Gather, Link, Recommend: A Framework for Earning Your Seat at the Table

It was one too many conversations. At conferences, in client meetings or hashed out over drinks. Why is our budget the first to be cut? Why am I left out of important conversations? How do I stop everyone in the room thinking they know how to do my job? How can I strengthen my authority, and earn a stronger voice at the executive table?
None of that’s a competence problem. It’s an authority problem.
In response, we built The Authority Cycle. A framework built from over 25 years’ experience working with complex global business and difficult stakeholder environments, where trust and authority are hard won but critical for success.
The Authority Cycle
The Authority Cycle is a practical way of structuring reporting and conversations. It gives you a sharper way to walk into the room with your manager, your CEO or your project sponsor.
Run it once and the conversation moves. Run it consistently, and authority compounds.
It runs in three stages:
Gather – What actually happened? What do the numbers show? Who did we reach or engage? This is where AI earns its keep, surfacing patterns and pulling together a full, messy list in seconds.
Link – What does that mean for the business, in the language it already uses, revenue, retention, risk, cost, timing?
Recommend – What should we do about it, and why, given the trade-offs? This is the step that actually builds authority, and the one no AI tool will ever do for you: naming the trade-off, choosing the path, and making the call.
Present that back as a clear recommendation backed by the insights. You build the narrative around what matters most and position yourself as the expert in the room.
Because in a world of noise, authority doesn’t go to the loudest voice in the room. It goes to whoever brings the clarity everyone else is missing. That’s how you earn your seat at the table.
See It Live at Fusion 2026
This is the framework behind The Authority Advantage, our session at IABC APAC Fusion 2026 in Brisbane. Through live exercises, you’ll connect data to what actually matters, reframe a tactical update as a strategic recommendation, and leave with a one-page cheat sheet you can put to work in your next leadership meeting.
Help Shape the Research
Ahead of the session, we’re collecting data on the way marketers and communicators report to boards and senior executives across APAC. We’d be really grateful for your response — it should take only two minutes:
(Open until Friday 2 October 2026)
We’ll be sharing what we learn live at Fusion.
