The Future of Communications: From Broadcast to Bot-Mediated Relevance

Thinking about certification?

Thinking about certification?

Here’s one way to know if it’s for you.

Learn what this Communication Management Professional (CMP) and Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP) is all about. Seek out people who have these initials beside their names. Ask them questions.

How was their experience taking the certification exam? What did they learn? Were they able to use what they learned? Did they become better communication professionals? And how did the certification benefit their careers?

What’s in it for you?

Finding the answers may help you decide.

In the recent “Thinking About Certification” webinar of the International Association of Business Communicators – Asia Pacific (IABC APAC), Chris Saxby, IABC APAC certification director, and Lucy Hose, SCMP, IABC Director of New South Wales, shared their experience and knowledge of these certifications.

The attendees learned about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the certification.

Chris talked about the six core principles of the communication profession: ethics, consistency, context, analysis, strategy, and engagement. Those who take the exam must have an understanding and appreciation of these core principles to be successful with the test.

This exam, which is composed of 100 multiple-choice questions, will take around three hours to complete. They include case study questions that will require the test taker to properly assess a situation and give sound advice on the most prudent action to take.

Lucy then shared her experience about taking the exam, her passion for professional development, and her love of learning the craft of communications. The certification, she said, aligned with her work advising leaders, making sure that decisions are grounded on ethics.

“It’s not a memory test, but a way to think about scenarios. They feel very real and relevant to what we may be doing in our day jobs. I really enjoyed the process,” said Lucy.

So if you think it’s a process you’d like to undertake, too, it may be time to move from thought to action.
